The big picture

It’s hard to look at how much weight I have to lose and not be discouraged. I always get overwhelmed by looking at the big goal number, and trying to figure out how long I have to do this.

I know I just started-this time- but it’s not like it’s the first time I’ve started.  And I look at the number and I’m like damn- that’s a LOT of weight to lose.  Then I wonder if I can do it. I know I want to. I know I need to, if I want to live the life I want. But, stick-to-it-ness isn’t really part of my vocabulary. I’m really one of those people who run at something full steam…then I run out of steam and I’m on to something else.

I wonder if I should stop looking at the amount I have to lose, and just break it up into small parts. I can lose 10lbs… maybe I should just focus on that?

maybe small goals would be helpful. what i’v learned while losing weight is no matter how much you have to lose, every step closer is going to be an improvement. if you are exercising, eating good, and shedding pounds you are going to look better and feel better- every pound counts. good luck!

how long are you going to have to do it? forever, if you want to be a thin person. it truly is a lifestyle.

when i had a lot to lose, i just tried to get out of that sequence, for example get out of the 190’s or the 210’s. i didn’t quite know how to phrase that, but it’s basically what you said - 10lb. increments. you can do this, but you have to start gradually and build up.

i see people start on here working out 2x a day or 5-6 days a week at the very beginning. if you’ve already been working out, then increasing is good, but you have to do something you can feasibly do for the rest of your life. working out 2x a day is not feasible for me, nor is it healthy for my body. excess will catch up to you regardless of what area it’s in.

the same with food. just start with cutting out the crap. and we all know what crap is. when i buy something at the store, i look at servings per container, on junk-not milk, and add up the calories, because it’s always 1 serving for me.

small steps lead to big changes.

    good luck.

I find that I get discouraged if I try to look at the big number. Just break it down to “I want to lose 5 lbs by July 4th” and then set another goal. I know that it is really hard to think this is a forever thing. Make small steps and they will lead to big success.

Thank you all for the good advice! I think that’s what I’m going to have to do. I’m making small goals and trying not to worry about what I have left to lose.
